The Legacy of Pauline Agassiz Shaw
October 12, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
The 2021 Lowell Lecture Series presented by the Paul Revere Memorial Association is a biographical series based on influential individuals with North End connections. By highlighting moments in the lives of Thomas Hutchinson, Prince Hall, and Pauline Agassiz Shaw, this lecture series examines their impact on the North End and beyond. This series covers distinct centuries of change in the North End to provide a more inclusive and comprehensive historical narrative.
Our third and final lecture is presented by Mary Howland Smoyer, Boston Women’s Heritage Trail, and Gretchen Grozier, President, Jamaica Plain Historical Society at the Paul Revere House, 19 North Square, Boston, 02113.
Learn how Boston social reformer Pauline Agassiz Shaw (1841-1917) used her wealth to pay for a vast number of philanthropic efforts including: financing the first public kindergartens in America, lobbying for both prison reform and world peace, participating in the women’s suffrage movement and founding day nurseries and neighborhood houses (including the North Bennet Street School).
Free to attend virtually.
All lectures will be available to stream for free and recorded for later viewing via WGBH’s Forum Network. Streaming will be provided on YouTube and Facebook
