“The ‘New’ Catholics Come to Town”
October 24, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm
Stephen Puleo, Author and Historian
When thousands of immigrants from Southern Italy flocked to the North End in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, their Catholic religious practices shocked the Irish diocesan hierarchy. Stephen Puleo will discuss what this reveals about why this group left Italy, how they viewed religion, and how their presence shaped the North End.
Part 3 of the Paul Revere House’s 2023 Lowell Lecture Series. This series examines the impact of shifts in religious traditions on the evolution of the North End with regard to cultural expression, demographics, political affiliations, and economic status. The 300th anniversary of Old North Church and the 150th anniversary of St. Leonard’s Church signal an opportune time to look broadly at how religion helped shape neighborhoods, cities, and the nation.
All lectures are free and in person at Suffolk University. Live streaming will be provided at https://www.facebook.com/gbhforumnetwork and https://www.youtube.com/gbhforumnetwork. Recordings for later viewing will also be available via GBH’s Forum Network.
Presented in partnership with GBH, the Suffolk University History Department, Old North Illuminated, and the North End Historical Society, with funding from the Lowell Institute. For more information, please contact staff@paulreverehouse.org or visit paulreverehouse.org
